• Bugfix: Nachdem Umschalten der "Use Font" oder "Use Color" Checkboxen in einer Gruppeneinstellung, führte das zweite Öffnen der Gruppe zu einem Absturz.
• Änderung: HTML-Tags werden nicht mehr als Quotezeichen hervorgehoben.
• Neu: Die Neuformatierung kommt besser mit Einrückungen zurecht.
• Neu: Das DblSpace-Selektion-Filter kann nun optional auch Muster mit anderen sich wiederholenden Zeichen wie z.B. in "T*h*i*sI* s S*p*a*m*!" erkennen.
• Neu: Dateien für zufällige Taglines(Cookies) werden unterstützt. Das Format ist identisch mit dem von YAM.
• Bugfix: Die Sortierung von gespeicherten Artikeln vor nicht gespeicherten oder gelesenen vor nicht gelesenen arbeitete fehlerhaft und wurde korrigiert.
• Neu: Ein Filter mit dem man Threads nach der Anzahl der Postings bewerten kann, die innerhalb eines bestimmten Zeitraums geschrieben worden sind. Hiermit können sehr aktive und weniger aktive Threads hervorgehoben werden.
• Neu: Filter können mit einen selbstdefinierbaren Toolbar-Icon versehen werden, mit denen sich ein Filter ein- und ausschalten läßt worauf die Artikelliste entsprechend aktualisiert wird. Hierzu stellt NewsRog im Images/Filter-Verzeichnis verschiedene 24-Bit Icons mit 50*30 Punkten zur Verfügung, die auf eine Auflösung von 800*600 in True-/Highcolor zugeschnitten sind.
• Bugfix: Die Any/All-Gadgets in Filterlisten besitzen nun eine Sprechblasenhilfe.
• Das Tutorial zu den Filtern wurde um Informationen zum Any/All-Modus erweitert.
• Änderung: Beim Anwählen des Close-Gadgets oder Cancel-Buttons während des Edierens eines neuen Postings wird nun gefragt, ob das Posting gelöscht oder zur Post-Queue geschickt werden soll.
• Neu: Der erste erreichbare bzw. nicht gelesene Artikel kann nun automatisch angezeigt werden, wenn vom All-Threads-Modus in den One-Thread-Modus gewechselt wird.
• Neu: Die Batch-Download-Buttons des Gruppenfensters besitzen nun Tastaturkürzel.
• Neu: SENDPOST ARexx-Befehl zum Versenden von einer oder mehreren, in der Post-Queue, anliegenden Nachrichten.
• Neu: Es gibt nun ein Druckermenü innerhalb des Gruppen-Menüs. Hierüber kann der angezeigte Artikel mit oder ohne Kopf ausdruckt werden.
• Änderung: Der Algorithmus zur Generierung von Abkürzungen für Usernamen wurde geändert. Wenn nur ein Name vorhanden ist wird nun nur noch der erste und nicht mehr die ersten fünf Buchstaben zurückgegeben.
• Neu: Die "variable lookup language" wurde stark um Formatierungsmöglichkeiten und mathematische Funktionen erweitert.
• Bugfix: Die PRI-Option der ${exec}-Funktion wurde bisher ignoriert.
• Neu: Verschiedene Filter zur Darstellung von Artikeln können den Text nun auch beim Speichern, Drucken und Beantworten modifizieren. Dies funktioniert bei den Filtern, die den Text eines Artikel verändern.
• Bugfix: Die HTML-Größenangaben des Server-Gruppen-Fensters im Tutorial #5 waren fehlerhaft.
• Änderung: Die HTML-Dokumentation wurde um viele Bildschirmfotos und neue Bereiche erweitert. Ältere Bildschirmfotos wurden durch neue ersetzt.
• Neu: Die Kommandozeilenoption SP=STARTPROJ/K wurde in SP=STARTPROJ/M geändert, dies erlaubt es einen Projektnamen ohne das STARTPROJ- bzw. SP-Schlüsselwort anzugeben.
• Änderung: Der Cache-Algorithmus für Artikel wurde so geändert, daß die gerade angezeigten Artikel immer im Speicher bleiben, selbst wenn sie die eingestellte Cachegröße überschreiten.
• Bugfix: Falls die "Mem cache articles" Einstellung für eine Gruppe ein vielfaches von 16 betrug, wurden u.U. Speicherbereiche überschrieben.
• Bugfix: Beim Lesen von Artikeln mit verschiedenen Längen in diversen Kombinationen konnte der Speicher-Cache zerstört werden.
• Neu: Ein neuer Button, inklusive Tastaturkürzel, erlaubt die Entfernung von selektierten Artikeln oder Threads aus der aktuellen Artikelliste, ohne daß diese Postings gelöscht werden.
• Bugfix: Einige, fehlerhafte News-Server geben eine erfolgreiche Antwort bei NNTP ARTICLE/HEAD/BODY-Befehlen, ohne eine einzige Textzeile zu verschicken. Dies führte bisher zum Absturz von NewsRog. Nun reagiert NewsRog auf diesen Fall entsprechend und kennzeichnet den Artikel mit einem entsprechenden Icon.
• Neu: Falls durch die Anzahl von runterzuladenden Artikeln die Obergrenze, der in einer Gruppe gewünschten Artikel überschritten wird, kann man nun die entsprechende Option so einstellen, daß die ältesten Artikel nicht oder alle Artikel unter Ignorierung der Größenbeschränkung runtergeladen werden. Dies kann automatisch im Hintergrund ohne Bestätigung oder erst nach einer Bestätigung erfolgen.
• Neu: Das Filter für die MIME-Anzeige bietet nun eine "No-Display Types"-Einstellung mit der die Anzeige von MIME-Typen, z.B. text/html, unterdrückt werden kann.
• Änderung: Die BadWrap-Fix-Option ist nun in der Voreinstellung aktiviert. Dies hat jedoch keine Auswirkungen auf existierende Projekte.
• Änderung: Der voreingestellte Wert der HLQuotes-Option ist nun "scrolled quote blocks" statt "toggled quote blocks". Dies hat keine Auswirkungen auf existierende Projekte.
• Bugfix: Fortlaufende Zeilen innerhalb der Artikel-Köpfe werden nun besser verarbeitet. Dies betrifft z.B. Referenzen und einige MIME-Features.
• Bugfix: Einige MIME-kodierte Bilder werden mit dem Dateinamen in der Dateinamenangabe des Content-Disposition Feldes verschickt. Üblicher ist es den Namen im Content-Type Feld anzugeben. Das Filter zur MIME-Anzeige kann nun beide Fälle verarbeiten.
• Neu: Falls ein Posting und die angehängte Signatur nur ASCII-Zeichen enthält, wird das Posting als text/plain MIME-Dokument mit der quoted-printable Kodierung verschickt.
• Neu: Der Zeichensatz, der beim Schreiben und Lesen von Postings verwendet wird, kann nun frei gewählt werden.
• Neu: Der Post-Editor besitzt mit "View Encoding" einen neuen Vorschaumodus. Dieser zeigt die raw-quoted-printable Kodierung des aktuellen Dokuments an. In diesen Modus sieht man Markierungen wie "=3D".
• Bugfix: Ein Speicherleck des Author-Note-Features bei Filtern wurde behoben.
• Neu: Die HELP- und USAGE-Kommandozeilenoptionen geben nun das NewsRog Befehlsmuster aus.
• Neu: Eine neue Spalte in der Gruppenliste zeigt an, ob die Gruppe moderiert ist. Der voreingestellte Wert ist "Nein" und wird nur geändert wenn man eine "Read Description"-Operation für die jeweilige Gruppe ausgeführt wird.
• Änderung: Klammern sind nicht mehr Teil der Abkürzung eines Usernamens.
• Bugfix: Die Benutzung der "Limit to Selected"-Gruppenmenüoption ohne vorhandene selektierte Artikel, führte zu einer Endlosschleife. Derselbe Fehler hatte zur Folge, das ein Artikel weniger als eigentlich angewählt angezeigt wurde.
• Änderung: Die minimale benötige Stackgröße für NewsRog wurde auf 80KB erhöht.

• On- und Offline lesen und schreiben, wobei selektierte Artikel, Gruppen und Threads in einem Rutsch auf die eigene Festplatte übertragen werden können.
• Internes Multitasking u.a. ist es möglich schon Artikel zu lesen, während die Nachrichtenköpfe von anderen Artikeln noch vom Server geholt werden. Eine zusätzliche Option erlaubt es gezielt einen Thread vorzuladen, während man noch den ersten Artikel des Threads liest.
• Unterstützung mehrerer Server.
• Clipboard Unterstützung.
• Suche innerhalb von Nachrichtentexten und -Köpfen.
• Plug-Ins zur Anzeige von Artikeln. Die Anzeiger erlauben es u.a. Postings in verschiedenen Zeichensätzen und mit farblich hervorgehobenen Passagen anzuzeigen, Signaturen zu unterdrücken usw.
• Filter zum Hervorheben von gewünschten und Unterdrücken von ungewünschten Postings und Threads.
• Sortierung von Artikeln, Gruppen usw. nach diversen Vorgaben.

Amiga Down Under '99, die am 21./22. August stattfindet, erscheinen:

With the imminent release of OS 3.5 for the Amiga Classic systems available
soon, the Amiga Down Under show scheduled for August 21, 22 will be the
host event for the official launch of 3.5.

OS 3.5 is the first new product for the Amiga in over 5 years, and it
includes the integration of the most requested features by Amiga users.
"When I took over the management of Amiga, one of my first decisions was to

This statement is made by Ben Rothwell on behalf of the entire
aMozillaX team.

When, in January 1999, we had the chance to begin work porting the
Mozilla source code to the 68k and PPC Amiga platforms, the press
coverage was significant and the community anxious to see a browser
with significant parts of the Netscape source code in it.

However, recently it has come to light that there is a growing stem
of discontentment amongst users of the Amiga, due to the fact that
they still do not yet have aMozillaX.

We would like to take this chance to make a formal apology to the
community for this situation. Initially we aimed for a release in June,
and at one stage it looked possible to make an early release in
early May. However, developing a program of this size and complexity is
not an easy task, and sometimes problems with the code or other problems
make the time slip back and the community ever more impatient.

We can assure you however that we are working hard to ensure that we
will be able to release Version 1.0 of aMozillaX at the World of Amiga
show in London, mid July. Certain features will be missing, such as Java
mainly due to problems and delays in third party JVM solutions.

However, we are confident that aMozillaX will be able to outperform all of
the current Amiga browsers upon release, offering speed and flexibility,

Hierzu stellt NewsRog im Images/Filter-Verzeichnis verschiedene 24-Bit Icons mit 50*30 Punkten zur Verfügung, die auf eine Auflösung von 800*600 in True-/Highcolor zugeschnitten sind.
• Bugfix: Die Any/All-Gadgets in Filterlisten besitzen nun eine Sprechblasenhilfe.
• Das Tutorial zu den Filtern wurde um Informationen zum Any/All-Modus erweitert.
• Änderung: Beim Anwählen des Close-Gadgets oder Cancel-Buttons während des Edierens eines neuen Postings wird nun gefragt, ob das Posting gelöscht oder zur Post-Queue geschickt werden soll.
• Neu: Der erste erreichbare bzw. nicht gelesene Artikel kann nun automatisch angezeigt werden, wenn vom All-Threads-Modus in den One-Thread-Modus gewechselt wird.
• Neu: Die Batch-Download-Buttons des Gruppenfensters besitzen nun Tastaturkürzel.
• Neu: SENDPOST ARexx-Befehl zum Versenden von einer oder mehreren, in der Post-Queue, anliegenden Nachrichten.

• Änderung: Der Algorithmus zur Generierung von Abkürzungen für Usernamen wurde geändert. Wenn nur ein Name vorhanden ist wird nun nur noch der erste und nicht mehr die ersten fünf Buchstaben zurückgegeben.
• Neu: Die "variable lookup language" wurde stark um Formatierungsmöglichkeiten und mathematische Funktionen erweitert.
• Bugfix: Die PRI-Option der ${exec}-Funktion wurde bisher ignoriert.
• Neu: Verschiedene Filter zur Darstellung von Artikeln können den Text nun auch beim Speichern, Drucken und Beantworten modifizieren. Dies funktioniert bei den Filtern, die den Text eines Artikel verändern.
• Bugfix: Die HTML-Größenangaben des Server-Gruppen-Fensters im Tutorial #5 waren fehlerhaft.
• Änderung: Die HTML-Dokumentation wurde um viele Bildschirmfotos und neue Bereiche erweitert. Ältere Bildschirmfotos wurden durch neue ersetzt.
• Neu: Die Kommandozeilenoption SP=STARTPROJ/K wurde in SP=STARTPROJ/M geändert, dies erlaubt es einen Projektnamen ohne das STARTPROJ- bzw. SP-Schlüsselwort anzugeben.
• Änderung: Der Cache-Algorithmus für Artikel wurde so geändert, daß die gerade angezeigten Artikel immer im Speicher bleiben, selbst wenn sie die eingestellte Cachegröße überschreiten.
• Bugfix: Falls die "Mem cache articles" Einstellung für eine Gruppe ein vielfaches von 16 betrug, wurden u.U. Speicherbereiche überschrieben.
• Bugfix: Beim Lesen von Artikeln mit verschiedenen Längen in diversen Kombinationen konnte der Speicher-Cache zerstört werden.
• Neu: Ein neuer Button, inklusive Tastaturkürzel, erlaubt die Entfernung von selektierten Artikeln oder Threads aus der aktuellen Artikelliste, ohne daß diese Postings gelöscht werden.
• Bugfix: Einige, fehlerhafte News-Server geben eine erfolgreiche Antwort bei NNTP ARTICLE/HEAD/BODY-Befehlen, ohne eine einzige Textzeile zu verschicken. Dies führte bisher zum Absturz von NewsRog. Nun reagiert NewsRog auf diesen Fall entsprechend und kennzeichnet den Artikel mit einem entsprechenden Icon.
• Neu: Falls durch die Anzahl von runterzuladenden Artikeln die Obergrenze, der in einer Gruppe gewünschten Artikel überschritten wird, kann man nun die entsprechende Option so einstellen, daß die ältesten Artikel nicht oder alle Artikel unter Ignorierung der Größenbeschränkung runtergeladen werden. Dies kann automatisch im Hintergrund ohne Bestätigung oder erst nach einer Bestätigung erfolgen.
• Neu: Das Filter für die MIME-Anzeige bietet nun eine "No-Display Types"-Einstellung mit der die Anzeige von MIME-Typen, z.B. text/html, unterdrückt werden kann.
• Änderung: Die BadWrap-Fix-Option ist nun in der Voreinstellung aktiviert. Dies hat jedoch keine Auswirkungen auf existierende Projekte.
• Änderung: Der voreingestellte Wert der HLQuotes-Option ist nun "scrolled quote blocks" statt "toggled quote blocks". Dies hat keine Auswirkungen auf existierende Projekte.
• Bugfix: Fortlaufende Zeilen innerhalb der Artikel-Köpfe werden nun besser verarbeitet. Dies betrifft z.B. Referenzen und einige MIME-Features.
• Bugfix: Einige MIME-kodierte Bilder werden mit dem Dateinamen in der Dateinamenangabe des Content-Disposition Feldes verschickt. Üblicher ist es den Namen im Content-Type Feld anzugeben. Das Filter zur MIME-Anzeige kann nun beide Fälle verarbeiten.
• Neu: Falls ein Posting und die angehängte Signatur nur ASCII-Zeichen enthält, wird das Posting als text/plain MIME-Dokument mit der quoted-printable Kodierung verschickt.
• Neu: Der Zeichensatz, der beim Schreiben und Lesen von Postings verwendet wird, kann nun frei gewählt werden.
• Neu: Der Post-Editor besitzt mit "View Encoding" einen neuen Vorschaumodus. Dieser zeigt die raw-quoted-printable Kodierung des aktuellen Dokuments an. In diesen Modus sieht man Markierungen wie "=3D".
• Bugfix: Ein Speicherleck des Author-Note-Features bei Filtern wurde behoben.
• Neu: Die HELP- und USAGE-Kommandozeilenoptionen geben nun das NewsRog Befehlsmuster aus.
• Neu: Eine neue Spalte in der Gruppenliste zeigt an, ob die Gruppe moderiert ist. Der voreingestellte Wert ist "Nein" und wird nur geändert wenn man eine "Read Description"-Operation für die jeweilige Gruppe ausgeführt wird.
• Änderung: Klammern sind nicht mehr Teil der Abkürzung eines Usernamens.
• Bugfix: Die Benutzung der "Limit to Selected"-Gruppenmenüoption ohne vorhandene selektierte Artikel, führte zu einer Endlosschleife. Derselbe Fehler hatte zur Folge, das ein Artikel weniger als eigentlich angewählt angezeigt wurde.
• Änderung: Die minimale benötige Stackgröße für NewsRog wurde auf 80KB erhöht.

• On- und Offline lesen und schreiben, wobei selektierte Artikel, Gruppen und Threads in einem Rutsch auf die eigene Festplatte übertragen werden können.
• Internes Multitasking u.a. ist es möglich schon Artikel zu lesen, während die Nachrichtenköpfe von anderen Artikeln noch vom Server geholt werden. Eine zusätzliche Option erlaubt es gezielt einen Thread vorzuladen, während man noch den ersten Artikel des Threads liest.

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
 We're about half way through the year, and what a year it's been so
far. It seems there's a genuine rebirth of confidence in the future
for Amiga. We have also discovered Amiga's new president is at home on
the web, and is actively using it. What a pleasant surprise that's
been! We have a number of thoughts from Jim Collas below that were
initially shared with the Amiga community through web postings. He's
even responded to a letter printed in "Amiga Update", and made sure
the facts got to our readers. This is all very good.
 Perhaps not so good, but who can be sure, the year has seen a rash of
"promise to pay or I won't make/write it" marketing schemes. I have
mixed feelings about those, but generally don't like them. We hear
from a reader on that topic in this issue.
 I don't want to get into a long "the year so far in review" column,
so I'll drop that theme right here. Instead I'll point out that we
seem to be missing another issue from the archives, just as we've
completed an effort to recover a number of issues that had been lost
along the way. This is issue 980525, which I didn't even realize we
had. (Embarrassed blush follows.) If anyone knows of or has a copy,
please help us out. We'll add it to the archive, and to our newly
revised backup plans.
 One last thing - the Amiga Yellow Pages (http://ayp.amiga.tm) are
putting "Amiga Update" online in a snazzy html format. Stop by, take a
look, and let them know what you think.

Greetings Brad,

 I enjoy the Amiga Update, and read the posts religiously. I have
noticed a trend lately in the Amiga community that is just now
starting to take off, the Pre-Pay. I am an understanding individual, I
can see that some products may warrant a drastic measure such as this,
but it is going too far. First, we have phase5 asking for pre orders
for the new G-3 based cards. Thats fine, hardware is expensive and
their funds were depleted by an earlier, uhm, boo boo. Since it worked
for them, some other hardware producers have followed the lead. But,
this deal about Fusion and PCx?? Oh, give me a break! Sometimes,
companies just need to take a chance. I might pre-order some hardware,
but not an emulator. Did the original version of Fusion do well? Did
they make a profit? With the new G-3s coming, I don't see how they
could insult us so. Where is it going to stop? Am I going to have to
pre-pay for my next pair of shoes before they are made? I'm sorry if I
am too loud, but this is too much. I have an A1200(infinitiv tower)
040/32m, and an A3000 that is waiting for a G-3.
 Anyway, Brad, thank you so much for continuing to produce a fine
newsletter. I read it often, and share the content (and the text
files) with my non-i-net friends.

 On balance, I agree with you. I doubt I'd ever do a pre-pay just
because it almost feels like blackmail. By the way, you'll have a long
wait before you find a pre-pay from Haage & Partner. They've gone on
record as stating they don't approve of the procedure, so "OS 3.6"
should be free of it. Good for them!

Brad,

 I have a Gateway Win95 box at home (in addition to my A3000 and
A4000). My internal IDE Zip drive on that machine failed, such that
you would insert a disk, the drive would start clicking slowly, and
nothing else would happen. Gateway replaced it for free.

 This was discussed briefly in MaximumPC magazine, in an interview
with Zip's president. He acknowledge the problem, which seems to have
been fixed.

 How can I refuse such a request? I have many postings and emails
about the critical features like CPU, multimedia capabilities, 3D
graphics performance, etc. Even though I am a bit rusty from years as
a large corporate executive, I have extensive experience as a hardware
designer focused on advanced computer architecture so I think I
understand these basic requirements. Putting the mainstream features
aside, I would like feedback on 3 targeted areas:

 1) I would really like some feedback on our overall strategy. I have
outlined our strategy in my last two postings in the executive update
section on our web page. I would like people to read these and give me
some feedback. Focus on the creation of a integrated, networked, and
distributed computing environment supporting powerful multimedia
computers and easy-to-use information appliances. Keep in mind that we
are using the emerging Information Appliance market to build momentum
for a new platform.

 2) I would also like some input on our implementation strategy. We
have spent the last four months researching technology and identifying
the best technology available in the world. Many top companies have
spent billions of $ generating some very exciting technology.
Technology like Java, Jini, QNX, Linux, new CPUs, graphics chips,
audio, etc. Our plan is to integrate the best technology in the world
into a new exciting computer platform focused on the future. We will
do this using Amiga developed object technology, GUI interfaces,
industry standards (PCI, USB, etc)and custom hardware. The resulting
platform will be revolutionary in nature allowing people to do things
they can't do with other computers. This is in the spirit of the Amiga
brand and the original Amiga computer. We will also offer a degree of
backwards compatibility with the current Amiga.

 3) The QNX kernel is very similar to the Linux kernel since they are
both variations of Unix. Because of this, we can leverage Linux device
drivers and even some applications. What do people think of leveraging
resources in the Linux community. They are the other great "non-MS"
community. This could help us accelerate our schedule. Remember that
the O/S kernel is only a small part of our software and overall
architecture. We still have Amiga GUI, Amiga objects, custom device
drivers, advanced networking, and the hardware architecture.

 This is enough for now. One more note, I will be traveling on
business for several days and won't have a chance to check this thread
until this upcomming week-end. I will look forward to the responses.

I haven't read Ben's write up yet but I don't recall saying anything to
the effect that the new Amiga will just be a high-end PC. This isn't an
accurate statement if you are referring to a Wintel PC. The new Amiga
will be very different than a Wintel PC. The only elements we will
share are industry standards like PCI, USB, etc. These are computer
industry standards and not Wintel PC standards. I think it's obvious
why we need to support good industry standards when possible. CPU and
core chipset will definitely be different and we are still evaluating
graphics alternatives. The O/S, GUI, APIs, software structure, etc.
will all be completely different. The new Amiga will be as similar to a
Wintel PC as the Apple Mac is.

working on pieces of the solution and don't know exactly how to bring
their technology to market. Our value is to pull it all together. We
are also looking at ways to emulate parts of the original Amiga at
lower levels. Once we release more information I think Amigans will be
very excited about the new Amiga.

 Jim Collas, AMIGA President, will be conducting a joint conference at
AmiWest in Sacramento and World of Amiga in London on Saturday, July
24, 1999. Mr. Collas will be in London, but will be talking via a
trans-Atlantic phone connection to the attendees at AmiWest. The joint
presentation will occur at AmiWest in Sacramento at 11 a.m. and in
London at 7 p.m. Mr. Collas will be revealing the latest developments
on the new hardware and software planned for release in the late 4Q of
this year.

 AMIGA has also announced that the following AMIGA personnel will be

 AmigaFest 99 (formerly referred to as Amiga Expo 99) at the Dayton
Computerfest®, one of the country's largest computer shows, will be
held at Hara Arena in Dayton, Ohio on 28 & 29 August. It is a show not
to be missed for Amiga users and the excitement continues to grow.

 O.S. 3.5 is to be formally released the weekend before AmigaFest 99
at the Amiga Show in Australia. While it will go on sale in North
America at the same time, AmigaFest 99 will be the first Computer Show
here where it will be available. We are seeing a lot of new products
being announced now and this will be the first opportunity for the
users to see them and for the developers and manufacturers to display
them in the eastern half of the country. Don't miss this opportunity!

 This show is being fully supported by Amiga. They have kindly
supplied some items for prizes to be given away. We have two Amiga
1200s and several Mice, Pads, and posters to give away. We are also in
discussion with Amiga Inc. executives about the possiblity of their

 June 21, 1999 - Rancho Cordova, CA - Paul Montgomery, Co-CEO of Play
Incorporated, died of a sudden heart attack late Saturday night while
vacationing with his wife in Seattle. Mr. Montgomery, 39, served as
President, Co-CEO and a member of the board of directors since
co-founding Play with his partner Mike Moore in 1994. Mr. Montgomery
is survived by his wife, Michele, his parents and siblings as well as
his extended family of friends at Play and throughout the industry.

 "This is an overwhelming loss both for Play and for the entire
industry. Paul was a visionary leader and a tremendous force shaping
the future of video, communications and the Internet," said Mike
Moore, Mr. Montgomery's partner and Co-CEO, "To his family, friends,
and co-workers he was a boundless source of wisdom, love and creative
energy. Beyond those he touched personally, Paul shaped the lives of
millions of people through the ideas, technologies and products he
championed into existence."

 "Paul will continue to touch millions more people through the teams
he molded and the powerful visions he seeded here at Play. Paul often
said, 'The best way to predict the future is to invent it.' Today, his
loving friends, partners and co-workers at Play proudly dedicate
ourselves to honoring Paul's memory by continuing forward to invent

 Prior to starting Play, Paul Montgomery was instrumental in launching
the desktop video industry. In 1986, Mr. Montgomery left his position
as a product manager at industry leader Electronic Arts to join a
fledgling company called NewTek. Mr. Montgomery's work catapulted
NewTek from a garage startup to one of the most influential companies
in video. In 1987, Mr. Montgomery and his co-workers conceived a new
kind of video production tool which Mr. Montgomery dubbed the Video
Toaster. The Video Toaster is now widely credited with launching the
desktop video industry and resulted in a Prime Time Emmy Award for Mr.
Montgomery and the Toaster team in 1992.

 In 1994 Mr. Montgomery left NewTek, and later that year founded Play
Incorporated with partner Mike Moore and a close-knit team of former
co-workers. Together, Mr. Montgomery and Mr. Moore developed a unique
corporate culture based on self-organizing teams and creatively
nurturing environments. This innovative leadership has made Play one
of the most successful and highly-respected companies in the high-tech
industry. In the 1996 book, 'The Age of Videography', Mr. Montgomery
was cited as one of the 25 most influential people in the history of
video. Mr. Montgomery and Mr. Moore were named recently by Wired
Magazine as two of the most influential people in the future of
Hollywood.

 This week Play will launch a memorial website dedicated to Mr.
Montgomery where the millions of people he touched can gather to

 Georg Hoermann has decided to discontinue VirusZ II. The good news is
that he is going to keep updating the xvs.library and VirusZ III.
VirusZ II was and always will be a very good virus killer, because the
brain of VZ II is the xvs.library. Now Virus Help Denmark has recieved
the source code of VZ II and they are looking for someone to develop
and improve VZ II. If you think you´re the right person for this job,

should give you the source code of VZ II. If Georg Hoermann and Virus

 It has now been quite some time since news first came out about the
BoXeR, a fully Amiga compatible motherboard being produced by Access
Information. In that time the project has suffered various delays,
some to do with the problematic situation in the Amiga market, and
others to do with a desire to improve the specification of the
product.

 At last BoXeR is nearing completion. The final board design is due to
enter prototyping within the next few days, and a prototype board
should be on display at the stand of distributor Blittersoft at the
World of Amiga show in London on the 24th to 25th of July. It is quite
likely that the board will not be fully functional by the time of the
show.

 Updated specification

 The main reason for the delays in BoXeR is a radical redesign which
will provide a significantly more up-to-date and powerful motherboard
than has been previously announced. The board pictured here was the
original motherboard design intended to be a modernised A4000 - the
new BoXeR contains a far more powerful feature set, close to what had
been mooted for the BoXeR 2 in the past.

 Probably the most obvious improvement is the inclusion on the
motherboard of 4 fully active PCI slots, which will enable BoXeR
owners to expand their machine with cheap but powerful PCI cards.
Although we will have to wait and see which cards will have drivers
written for them, we can expect to see SCSI cards, cheap 100MBit
Ethernet, powerful soundcards, internal modems and low cost but
phenomenally powerful graphics cards such as the Voodoo Banshee which
provides better than BlizzardVisionPPC performance for well under
£100. However the improvements do not stop there.

 High speed DMA I/O transfer means that most peripherals will work at
high speeds with lower CPU overheads - you'll be able to use fast
serial and parallel devices, UDMA hard drives and so on. This, along
with ATX formfactor, DIMM sockets and PS/2 peripheral compatibility,
will make the BoXeR a very powerful and cheap to expand system.

 BoXeR is also designed to bring the more specifically Amiga aspects
of the architecture up to date. The thing that is most likely to
please and surprise the Amiga faithful is that the BoXeR has a highly
integrated single chip replacement for the AGA chipset, which is
feature compatible but will include significant enhancements,
including for the first time a total removal of the Chip RAM barrier.
A 64 bit wide connector for a PowerPC expansion card will also allow a
cheap solution for future upgrades to G3 or even G4 processors.

The latest specifications for the BoXeR motherboard are as follows:

 o Flash ROM 2Mb, 32 bit wide. Used for boot ROM's and resident
   modules..
 o Hi-Density floppy disk drive interface, uses standard PC floppy
   drives..
 o CD-ROM audio input connector and mixer..
 o Real Time Clock..
 o Keyboard port for standard low cost PC PS/2 keyboard..

Free Update Patch for Opus Magellan 5.8

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

 GPSoftware is proud to demonstrate its continuing support for the
Amiga with the release of a FREE UPDATE patch to its popular File
Management and Workbench Replacement software, Directory Opus Magellan
II.

 The update is available free to registered users and upgrades Opus
Magellan 5.8 to 5.81. While some new features have been added such as
support for the NewMouse standard, improved OpusFTP operations, and
improved ease of use, this release is mainly a service update
providing solutions to a number of issues identified by end users.

Subject: The Bobby Tool and KOSH

Summary of debate: As mentioned a long while ago (but now directly relevant
                   again as we discuss the KOSH website) the Bobby Tool which
                   is available from http://www.cast.org/bobby checks a URL to
                   see if it conforms to certain standards. The aim of this is
                   is to increase accessibility to the web page(s) in question
                   by examining the html code to see that it includes things
                   like alternative text for images (used by speech based web
                   browsers). It was suggested that all KOSH pages should use
                   this tool. A page that passes the tests can use a "Bobby
                   Approved" link logo on the page.

                   Also suggested is that we should include a separate page on
                   the KOSH site explaining exactly what the approval logo
                   means and why we feel that it is important, etc.


b)

Subject: Siamese Amiga

Summary of debate: See http://access.amiga.tm/ or
                   http://ww.snowcrash.u-net.com/ which contain information on
                   the "Amiga on a PCI" project being designed by Access and
                   Siamese.

c)

Subject: KOSH Survey WG - draft user survey document

Summary of debate: The draft user survey document from the KOSH Survey WG was
                   posted to the ML (see the email from Michael Merriman,
                   repugnant@yahoo.com, 8th June, "[KOSH] KOSH User Survey
                   Draft"

                   Comments, suggestions and ideas on it were asked for from
                   the people on the General ML before the survey is made
                   publicly available.

                   The survey will be available at
                   http://www.kosh.net/survey/index.html
                   and will also be available by email from
                   survey-request@kosh.net with the word "Survey" in the
                   subject line.

                   KOSH will -not- be using mass mailing to reach people with
                   the survey - if anyone receives it via a mass email they
                   should forward it to abuse@kosh.net (complete with the
                   header) so that action may be taken.

                   A selection of comments from the General ML on the survey
                   follow:

                   BeOS should be included as a separate OS and not be grouped
                   under "other". The same applies to OS/2. MacOS could be
                   subdivided like the Amiga entries are (AmigaOS 3+ and 2 and
                   under).

                   Some may object to being asked what sex they are. Perhaps
                   "gender" is the term that should be used and the question
                   should be marked as optional?

                   the job section should recognise disabled people in some
                   way without giving wrong impressions. Also, "Homemaker" or
                   a similar category should be included.

                   How about a category to directly identify respondees that
                   have jobs that are directly computer related?

                   Could we ask if a person uses a particular OS through
                   choice, because it came with the machine, because it was
                   recommended or because they have to (at work for example)?

                   Thomas Jensen volunteers to make a Danish Translation of the
                   survey.

                   Personal information should be clearly marked as:
                   - optional
                   - completely confidential
                   - purely for identifying KOSH's audience
                   Compulsory personal information tends to put one into Lie
                   Mode.

                   The survey should -somehow- reach people that don't
                   generally use computers for whatever reason (but -not- via
                   mass e/mailing).

                   The above (and more) were taken on by the User Survey WG
                   team and are to be considered for incorporation into the
                   survey.

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
 One of the most interesting things we bring your way in this issue is
the announcement by Amiga of nominations for their Advisory Committee.
You can pick up a nomination form from one of several web sites, print
it out, fill it out and fax it back. Give the matter some thought if
you decide to nominate someone, but don't hesitate if you can come up
with a good candidate.
 The letter below from Jim Collas clears up some interesting comments
made by Gateway's top person Ted Waitt. We were surprised there wasn't
more talk in the Amiga community about Mr. Waitt's statements, but
apparently there was sufficient to cause the writing of this letter.
We really appreciate the attempts at communication being made by Amiga
lately, and hope the community appreciates these efforts as well (even
if, as has been pointed out on the net, the folks at Amiga seem to do
all their writing in Micro$oft Word! On a Windows based net site!
Hmmmm.)
 Despite the choice of word processor and web server, despite the fact
that the photo of him on the website makes Jim Collas look
suspiciously like "The Master", we're beginning to think we have
someone more like "The Doctor" this time. We hope so. We also hope he
occasionally uses an Amiga for some of his work ...

 Just been reading the Amiga Update which arrived a couple of days
ago.

 My primary comment concerns the new Gateway computer, "for sale in
Japan".

 That new machine, with the motherboard built into the back of the LCD
display has been available at some of the Country Stores in the USA
since early March.

 It is just a Windows box with one out of the ordinary feature ... In
the CMOS setup, there is a choice of operating system to start up at
boot time. The choices are Windows and Other.

 Interesting observations - I was unaware of the "Other" designation.
Presumably that would be something like Linux.
 What interested me was the juxtaposition of the story about the
Japanese Gateway computers with the Amiga concept drawings, which were
being made available to the press. One of those drawings clearly shows
a very portable Amiga with an attached LCD display - very reminiscent
of the description of the Japanese computers. Time will tell if
there's anything in common.

 Regards the gentleman who can't find an Amiga to buy...

 Tell him to check Ebay. Find a seller with lots of positive feedback
and little or no negative feedback; those folks are as good as gold,
because they protect their feedback status fervently, feverishly, and
fretfully.

 Seriously, I've noticed A4000, 1200, 600, 500, 2000 and 3000s (not
sure what the gent is looking for).

 Keep up the good work, and there is NO excuse for not owning an
Amiga, if you want one.

 That's a very good suggestion. Another possibility is
comp.sys.amiga.marketplace if you have access to newsgroups. There's
less protection from unscrupulous sellers, but there are sometimes
notes posted about who's regarded as good and who's not.

Dear Amigans,

 Ted Waitt was recently interviewed by Guardian Online about Gateway's
plans in general. There was also a question specifically about
Gateway's plans for Amiga that Ted answered as follows: "we've had a
group of people working on leveraging the Amiga assets into an
appliance strategy for us. How well that works out, I don't know: it
will be interesting to see. There are some great assets there. It's
definitely not a computer business.'' This comment has obviously
spurred many responses from the Amiga community. I want to assure
people that this doesn't reflect a shift in our Amiga plans. We have
not changed our plans to release a next generation Amiga multimedia
computer. I have described the new multimedia computer and how it
integrates into a full "information appliance" environment in my May
letter to the community posted on our web site. Please read the May
letter, as it will help you understand Amiga's product strategy.

 Ted's comments refer to Gateway's product plans for using the Amiga
technology. Gateway's main interest in the next generation Amiga
technology is for the emerging information appliance market. Gateway's
focus on Internet connected information appliances is justifiable
given the extremely high potential of this market and it's threat to
the PC industry. Prominent Industry analysts have called information
appliances "the next Internet wave'' and "one of the most exciting
opportunities of the new millennium.'' By the year 2002, it is
forecasted that information appliance shipments will surpass PC
shipments and there will be more information appliances connected to
the Internet than PCs. If I were CEO of Gateway, this would also be
one of my primary areas of focus. But I am not CEO of Gateway. I am
CEO of Amiga and I don't want to confuse Gateway's plans with Amiga's.
There is a significant overlap in our plans but there is a difference
in focus. I have been empowered by Ted to drive Amiga as an
independent company with it's own strategy and plans. This will
eliminate a major challenge that has held Amiga back for many years.
The challenge of getting the proper attention and priority from large
corporate parent companies which are focusing on their core business.

 Regarding Amiga's strategy, I have mentioned many times that Amiga
will use the immense emerging information appliance market to build
momentum for our next generation architecture. This is why we have
come up with an architecture that integrates the power of multimedia
computing into a full home computing environment that includes
information appliances. This is a revolutionary architecture and
computing environment for the future that combines power and
simplicity. It is a powerful plan that gives Amiga a great chance of
rising again as a significant force in the industry. On my trip to
Germany and the U.K. last month, I presented details of the
architecture and plans to a small group of prominent people in the
Amiga community. I did this confidentially to get some feedback and
validation on our plans. Once people understood exactly what we were
doing, the feedback was very positive and people were excited about
the revolutionary new architecture. Personally, I am extremely excited
about sharing details of the new Amiga architecture with the community
as a whole but we are still in a very sensitive stage relative to
competition and technology partners. I know this is frustrating to the
community since you have waited so long for a next generation product.
We will continue to share as much information as possible when it is
appropriate.

 I hope this letter clarifies Ted's statements on Gateway's use of
Amiga technology. I will continue communicating as much as possible.
You can expect to see my June letter to the community in a few weeks.
I promise you that 1999 is going to be a great year for Amiga and the
Amiga community. Keep the momentum going as we come back for the

Nomination Forms for the Amiga Advisory Council.

 As the company moves forward, the advisory council will be
influential in helping to set the future direction of Amiga, with a
special focus on the needs and desires of the existing Amiga

 The Council will be made up of representatives from the Amiga
community. Once the Nomination forms have been faxed in, then Amiga
management will select representatives from the developer, press,
dealer/distributor, user group, and general user communities.

 Amiga will be evaluating and selecting the candidates based on the

 * Experience with the various Amiga user groups or similar Amiga
community organization (such as ICOA, Brainiac, UGN, Team Amiga, Jay

 * Communication with the Advisory council will be in English and will
primarily be done via the Internet.

           DELFINA PLUS - A GREATLY IMPROVED DELFINA LITE

 As companies need to always improve their products based on customer
input, complaints and suggestions, we have taken into consideration
what are the biggest flaws on Delfina Lite and how they could be
remedied without making the board much more expensive. The new Delfina
sound board design fixes the biggest problems and enhances performance
about 100 percent on some areas and over 200 percent on others. We
feel that the improvement definitely deserves a new name - Delfina
Plus.

 Delfina Lite, the popular DSP sound board for Amiga, does not have a
very high speed bus interface. Therefore the overall system may feel
slow responding, especially when running many sound outputting
programs at the same time. Slow bus speed is a result from only 8 bit
Zorro bus interface and inefficient bus handling on Delfina side. On
new design, the greatest priority object was to improve bus interface,
and we have really achieved that. New interface is real 16 bit and
much more efficient, taking less Amiga's CPU time and also less
Delfina's DSP time, while delivering minimum of 3 times the transfer
speeds of Delfina Lite. What this means is, that user can now use many
more simultaneous audio programs (AHI programs or native Delfina audio
programs) without slowing much down system's responsiveness.

 Also DSP clock rate has been risen from 40MHz to 74MHz. Faster clock
rate means that even multiple DelFX effects programs will not use up
all DSP power, and Delfina Kernel will not need to bring down the
sound codec clock rate from 48kHz, as it often does on Delfina Lite.
Delfina Plus is capable of 220 million operations per second, which of
course means nothing in simple use, but sure comes handy with multiple
sound processing with effects piped in. A graphical interface used for
sound piping will be introduced.

 In our tests the effective performance improvement has been much more
than the clock rate increase, because faster clock also makes the
codec and memory transfer tasks use up smaller portion of total DSP
load. User can view the current DSP load with the DelfLoad program.

Some advantages of Delfina Plus against other sound cards:

 o the best AHI support
 o a free PPC AHI driver licence for Delfina owners coming
 o the only soundcard supporting infinite number of virtual AHI
   devices with only one sound card
 o interpolating mix of virtual AHI devices is made with Delfina's DSP
 o AHI brings a wide range of applications to Delfina

 o DelFX effects applicable to any audio producing program's output or
   external input

 o sound piping from program to another
 o piping with CLI utilities or DelFX software

 FACTS is the only GUI-based SNTP clock syncronisation tool available
for the Amiga. It syncronises your system time and/or battery
backed-up clock to a server across the Internet that participates in
the Network Time project (http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~ntp). NTP
attempts to keep time accurate to within 200 picoseconds. FACTS is a
client implementation of a subset of NTP called SNTP, and aims to keep
your computer clock accurate to within 20ms (previous releases - and
most other Amiga clock syncronisers - can only manage 1s accuracy!)

 If there is a problem connecting to your specified server, the new
Aninc(tm) technology allows FACTS 2.7 to try an alternative server
without needing to know the address! A fully customisable AutoDST
implementation means that you only need one program to keep your clock
accurate and adjust for summertime when off-line - and it works even
if you never reboot. FACTS keeps the TZ environmental variable
up-to-date, and also emulates SummerTimeGuard's behaviour for full
compatibility with YAM2 (http://www.yam.ch)

 FACTS can connect to any server on any port number. It supports the
sntp, time/udp, time/tcp and daytime services and works with any
AmiTCP4 compatible TCP/IP stack. It can be run in the background and
controlled via the GUI or ARexx, or simply executed from the CLI when
required. Date strings are localised, and the GUI uses GadTools for
proper system integration and efficiency.

From Ben Hutchings:

 Back in August I bought myself a new 4.3 gigabyte hard drive to
replace the one previously used in my Amiga, which seemed to be about
to fail. It was then that I decided to do something about the poor
support for such large drives by OS 3.1. I wouldn't have started on
this if Heinz Wrobel hadn't already done the necessary work on disk
drivers and file-systems. What was missing were replacements for
Format and DiskCopy.

 I quickly wrote an incomplete CLI-only replacement for Format, tested
it out, briefly announced it and then left it unfinished.

 This was not the right thing to do. So over the past month or so I
completed all the CLI functionality, added a few extra neat features
by request, made sure it worked in just the same way as Format version
40, and added a font-sensitive GUI. In the last 3 days I spotted and
fixed 6 minor bugs (nothing dangerous). Nothing much seems to be wrong
with it now - except that there are a few parts missing and it isn't
localised.

 If you have a large disk, or just want a nicer looking Format
program, perhaps you'd like to try it out and tell me whether it works
properly for you? The programmers here might also be able to help me
fill in the gaps. (Full source code is included.)

 You can find it on Aminet as util/sys/BHFormat.lha. You may have to
wait a day or so for the current version (43.4) to appear - check the
version in the readme file.

 Taller than the tallest building, faster than the fastest plane, it's
not just a rumour, it's...

 Since Easter we have been SWAMPED, not merely swamped but bigtime
SWAMPED, with enquiries about iBrowse 2. Yup, OK, it's our own fault,
some Bright Spark (who shall remain nameless but answers to the word
"boss") insisted on emailing our ever so slightly massive iBrowse
announcements list just before Easter with the news that iBrowse 2 was
imminent.

 Ahem. Not to put too fine a point on it, but this wasn't entirely
true. Notwithstanding the fact that Stefan (the author) put the entire
project on hold while he stood in line for a week to see the first
midnight showing of Star Wars Episode 1, iBrowse 2 is currently still
in beta test (build version 20.22 if anyone is interested).

 And there is a lot to test (take a big breath): full JavaScript 1.2
implementation, HTML 4 support, improved GUI, improved preferences,
the cache system has been rewritten (it's now even faster and even
easier to use), the table parser has been rewritten (it's now lots
faster), spoofing has been implemented, there's external news client
support, an improved URL completer, multiple browsers can be opened in
one window (controlled by a nifty tab system) plus, of course, plug-in
support. And those are just the highlights!

 Testing is going well and iBrowse 2 is very, very close to being
released. We know you are going to love it and as soon as we've ironed
out the few remaining glitches we'll be mailing everyone on the
iBrowse announcements list with a special pre-release upgrade deal -

 Here's the message I wrote to HTTPResume users whose e-mail addresses
I know:

 You received this message because you expressed interest in
HTTPResume. If you don't want to receive these announce messages in
the future, please tell me.

 HTTPResume v1.6a appeared on Aminet. It was *not* released by me and
it's *not* official HTTPResume release. The latest official release is
still v1.6, dated 24-Apr-99 01:22:40 and its size is 107036 bytes.
Official archive is 110318, .readme 2109 bytes long. Checking on
http://www.bigfoot.com/~TheAntony/HTTPResume/ is the only way to be
sure that the new version is out. It will always have information on
latest HTTPResume releases and latest HTTPResume archive on local
server.

 I have no connection to v1.6a and can't say whether it has backdoors
or anything malicious inside it (I doubt it, though). I have uploaded
the official v1.6 archive to Aminet today. If you haven't downloaded
"v1.6a", you have no reason to download any comm/www/HTTPResume.lha
archive from Aminet for a while since next version (v1.7) won't be
released in near future. If you are unsure which version you have,
download the official archive from HTTPResume page mentioned above.

 If you have installed this "new" version, please replace it with the
official one. Thank you.

 I looked at Aminet recent list and found out that HTTPResume v1.6a
was there (so much about 36 hours). The guy that uploaded it also
decided that he can speak in my name and wrote version history for
"v1.6a" making it look like I wrote (the word he likes to use,
"childish", comes to mind). The rest can be read in message above. The
scary thought is that anyone can replace anything on Aminet with no
problems, and there's nothing that can be done about that. It seems
that PGP signing is the only solution...

Viruswarnung: Mischung aus CIH&Melissa-Virus aufgetaucht

Dem Viruserfinder ist es gelungen einen Virus zu basteln, der
sich wie Melissa drastisch per eMail vermehrt und solch einen
Schaden anrichtet, wie es der CIH-Virus getan hat.

Der Virus mit dem Namen "Worm.Explore.Zip" verbreitet sich,
indem er sich selbst an eMail-Adressen des Adressbuches und an
die Absender, von denen bereits eine eMail empfangen hat,
verschickt.

Er benötigt dazu eMail-Programme, die auf Messaging
Application Programming Interface (MAPI) beruhen, wie z.b.
Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Exchange, Netscape Mail.

In der eMail steht folgendes: "I received your email and I
shall send you a reply ASAP. Till then, take a look at the
attached zipped docs." Der Betreff der eMail ändert sich
laufend.

Die Datei (zipped_files.exe) ist 210,432 bytes groß. Das
Icon der Datei sieht aus, wie das Icon des WinZip Self-Extractors.
Beim öffnen der Datei wird folgende Fehlermeldung
vorgetäuscht: "Cannot open file: it does not appear
to be a valid archive. If this file is part of a ZIP format
backup set, insert the last disk of the backup set and try again.
Please press F1 for help."

Jetzt durchsucht er Ihre Festplatte nach Dateien mit den Endungen:
.c, .cpp, .h, .asm, .doc, .xls, or .ppt. Er löscht dann den
Inhalt der Dateien, so das die Dateien dann 0 byte groß sind.
Der Virus kopiert sich dann in das Systemverzeichnis von Windows
unter dem Namen Explore.exe und verändert bei Windows 95
die Datei WIN.INI und bei Windows NT einen Eintrag in der
Regestrierung, so daß das Programm jedes Mal ausgeführt
wird, wenn der Rechner startet.

Um den Virus loszuwerden, muß folgendes unternommen werden:

Windows 9x:

Starten Sie ihren Rechner im MS-DOS Modus
Geben Sie ein: edit C:\Windows\Win.ini löschen Sie fogenden
Eintrag: run=c:\windows\system\explore.exe
Danach können Sie die Datei C:\Windows\System\explore.exe
löschen.

Windows NT:

Im Task Manager ist der Virus unter dem Namen "explore" zu
erkennen. Starten Sie regedit, indem Sie regedit bei Start,
Ausführen, eintragen. Löschen Sie aus dem Ordner
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Windows] folgenden Schlüssel
"run"="C:\\WINNT\\System32\\Explore.exe"
Starten Sie Windows NT neu und löschen Sie die Explore.exe
im Windows-System32 Verzeichnis.

Bei Symantec (www.symantec.de) gibt es schon passende
Virus-updates, die man sich auf jedenfall installieren sollte.

not email the scribe regarding any of these topics, it is not his job to answer
these questions but merely to report  the topics of conversation. If you have

Before I start this summary it is probably worth noting that despite the
shorter length of summaries of the General List these days it does not mean
that KOSH is disappearing. A lot of traffic on particular issues has moved to
other KOSH lists and the KOSH Working Groups are doing exactly that...working.

(without the quotes) in the message body for a list of KOSH Mailing Lists.
Additionally "info <list>" (again ignore the "" and put the name of the list in
between the <>) provides information about any particular list. Note commands
like this -must- be in the message body and -not- on the subject line.

a)

Subject: KOSH openness

Summary of debate: It was expressed that KOSH should not develop behind closed
                   doors. We should always be honest with people about what
                   KOSH can and cannot do.


b)

Subject: KOSH URL code

Summary of debate: HTML code can often be rather unwieldy containing large
                   amounts of blank space or alternatively be stuck so tightly
                   together with no white space that it is difficult to read
                   (but noting that there are many many fine web sites out with
                   well thought out cod).

                   This was mentioned with the apparent implication being that
                   all code on KOSH web sites should be well structured and
                   easily readable (as should the actual sites themselves).
                   Scribe's note: Please note that I am not for a second
                   suggesting that the current KOSH web sites fall below these
                   standards!


c)

Subject: Mick Tinker and KOSH

Summary of debate: It was expressed (and agreed by others) that we would like
                   to get Mick Tinker, the person who is designing the Boxer
                   (Amiga Clone) involved in the KOSH project as his philosophy
                   and technical skills would be great to add to the list of
                   talent in the KOSH repetoire.

Subject: Larry Wall in Linux Journal

Summary of debate: There is an interview with Larry Wall, the creator of Perl
                   on http://www.linuxjournal.com/issue61/3394.html which is an
                   entertaining read of how Perl developed and where it is
                   going etc.


e)

Subject: Embedded KOSH

Summary of debate: KOSH could look at getting into the embedded application
                   market, a bit like Motorola do with there chips. Often the
                   badge of Motorola is not seen on the product but the company
                   still makes profits from sales. This addition to the way
                   KOSH is used could help make extra money for the Project.


f)

Subject: Amiga on a card

Summary of debate: See http://www.siamese.co.uk as Siamese are developing the
                   software that will interface an Amiga on a PCI card to
                   Windows and Linux. Access Innovations,
                   http://access.amiga.tm are producing the hardware (the
                   InsideOut).
